Missed Opportunities

Amidst everything I miss from Carleton, which is quite a lot-too numerous to write, I admit, I still miss comps. The most gut wrenching moments, are when I stumble upon missed comps opportunities. Don't worry, I don't regret spending countless hours in the libe reading and writing about suicide, aliens, and heaven's gate, but there are those moments where something extraordinary comes across you and you can't help but regret-just a little.

I watched this amazing (granted-dated) documentary of Tammy Faye Baker. RuPaul narrates, so you know this is quality scholarly work. Now this touches on everything that fascinates me about religion: charismatic leaders, modern/technical preaching, christianity in general. There is such a delicate line between religion and modernity. While we could spend time debating the legitimacy between broadcasted prayer and extraterrestrial souls, it all really boils down to authority. This might be what I find most fascinating about religion and Christianity, especially. Human nature revolves around these characters of 'legitimate authority;' you can't have Christianity without Christ. Tammy and her husband based their whole lives around christian television; this doesn't seem that odd nowadays but there is something just strange and artificial about it. Religion to me is all about communal experience, which just seems so synthetic if it is coming from a tv set. While I find mass religion incomprehensible, others find it comforting and a rewarding tool of prayer. The intracies of technology and religion are mind bogglingly endless.

Needless to say it would have been a great comps paper. Not to mention I would have had a whole section on her mascara.
